Mother-Daughter team Landis Pinkham and Tricia Woolard opened Cottage Junkies in 2012. It had always been a dream of Landis’s to open a small business in Washington where she was born and raised. When most teenagers dream of getting out of Washington as soon as they graduate, Landis was content to study business at Beaufort County Community College and begin the process of following in her grandmother’s footsteps and opening her own business.
It wasn’t an easy process. Finding a place to rent, getting the word out and making it unique were all part of the challenge. A large portion of items for sale in Landis’s store aren’t pieces she’s ordered either. She and her family attend estate sales and auctions to find furniture to refurbish, unique antiques and other treasures. These pieces, combined with the work of local artisans and Made-in-the-USA items, come together into the loveliest pile of “junk” you’ve ever seen!
You immediately get lost in the unique atmosphere of the store. It’s modern Southern meets Old South. The latest styles in Southern jewelry and scarves intermingled with antique lace handkerchiefs and refurbished furnishings. The cutest burlap creations are mixed among elegant throw pillows. And all the while, you’re relaxed by the light scent of Landis’s latest candle choice.
And when you enter Cottage Junkies, whether you’re a regular or a visitor, you’re greeted personally by Landis or her mom. This is just one aspect of Downtown Washington, she loves. “Sometimes we get visitors traveling through who share their stories. And, then an old high school friend will drop by,” Landis shares. But what she’s most thankful for is the support of her local community. “It’s been unreal. Owning your own business, means you never stop working! But, the community has been so supportive of us.”
Have your own piece of cottage junk that you want to give new life? Take it by the shop and talk to Landis about the possibilities. She loves to help her fellow junkies! To see the newest additions to Cottage Junkies, you can follow them on Facebook or Instagram.
